Proper Forklift Training

Posted by on Jan 19, 2015 in Other |

I know this site is primarily used for buying and selling forklifts, but we need to remember that safety should be the number 1 priority when operating heavy machinery. In today’s economy forklifts are vastly used. In the United States, there are about 1 million active forklifts. Unfortunately for a myriad of reasons, these machines, on average, cause 85 fatal accidents per year, 34,900 accidents as serious injuries, and 61,800 as non-serious. Notably, forklift operators cause 40% of the total accidents. It is extremely important to ensure sufficient forklift training, such as a professional forklift train the trainer program in order to put a stop gap on the number of forklift related injuries.

Without proper training, operators will not have sufficient skills to operate a forklift. For example, poorly trained operators may not be able to control the forklift when faced with sudden issues such as an unseen pedestrian. They may not see the potential risks until it is too late to avoid them. Therefore, accidents may simply happen, and happen more frequently than they should.

One way to mitigate potential pedestrian issues is to install a forklift blue light on all your forklifts. These don’t replace proper and safe operational training but they do give pedestrians a heads up of an approaching lift truck.

When operators are not well trained, they may not realize the potential threats in the workplace. For example, if the workplace is too narrow with crowded or cluttered aisles, high volumes of pedestrian traffic, bad conditions of the loading dock, noisy atmosphere, poor lighting, etc., they are more prone to accidents.

According to a survey conducted by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), many companies said that they did not have sufficient forklift train the trainer program because of cost, expert shortages, and subjective attitudes. Such a fact is very dangerous because it will be a direct cause of many accidents in the future. If companies had forklift trainers, such trainers could provide regular training to all current and future employees. Read about OSHA compliance here

Choosing a forklift train the trainer program should be the first step of any business operating forklifts. Don’t jeopardize your safety, or the safety of your employees and pedestrians.
